SWIM Team, 2008

In October 2008, a team of fifteen Year 11 and 12 students and three teachers from Southern Highlands Christian School came to the Solomon Islands for 10 days.  After two days at the SWIM base, they boarded a plane and went to the island of Malaita.  They rode on the back of a truck to the village of Ramaei, on North point of the island.music workshop

While in the village, the two groups went to work.   One group of students worked at a first aid station with the parent volunteer who was also a nurse. The students in this group had completed a St. John’s first aid course before traveling to the Solomons. The other group led a music workshop with Team leader and teacher Geoff Peet.

Aruligo

In February, 2009, floods occurred throughout Guadalcanal, destroying gardens and damaging water supplies.  SWIM received a donation to help villagers in Aruligo when a previous resident from that village heard about the flooding.

Michael Rietveld went on an exploratory trip with a translator to see what supplies were most needed.  A week later, SWIM delivered the food and other supplies to the villagers.  Since the road was closed due to the flooding, supplies were delivered by boat.aruligoaruligo

KYB Workshop

In March, 2009, Machi and Unity held a women’s workshop in Maoro, on the island of Malaita. The first two days of the workshop focussed on teaching the leaders from several neighbouring villages about KYB (Know Your Bible), a women’s Bible Study.  machi at workshop

The last two days contained sessions on Godly living for women, including “The Godly Wife,” and “My Family, My Home, My Responsibility”.  Many women were challenged to examine their relationships at home, and also their relationship with God.  Near the end of the workshop, one woman who had left her husband four times saw the need for a true relationship with Jesus, and gave her heart to the Lord. She also decided to return to her husband.

Hilda (mum) and Jillian (daughter) helped with the workshop. The two other sons, Jonathan and Joshua, kept the children in the village busy with activities during the workshop.
